An anonymous page may still return an edit key, owner token, or capability URL that decides who can change it later. For a desktop publishing tool, that value is part of the user's continuing control over the page.\n\nI checked the Wordcell hosted-publication documentation on 15 October 2026 while working with an AI assistant on Linkflow. Its hosted API separates a publication token from the public site address. This note uses that separation as a design example. It does not claim that a new Wordcell page was published during this documentation check.\n\n## Keep the address and the authority separate\n\nA public URL is meant to travel. It belongs in a task result, a public citation, or a message to a reader. An ownership credential has a different audience: the component authorized to manage the page. Putting both in a single “result” object and logging that object everywhere makes the distinction easy to lose.\n\nA small data model can make the boundary explicit. The task record can hold the public address, the original content hash, a publication stage, and a reference to a secret entry. The secret entry holds the credential in protected storage. The reference is an internal association, not a credential that should work against the remote service.\n\nThis does not require a new identity service. A desktop application's existing encrypted credential store and task database can be enough, provided the association survives a restart and export/import is treated deliberately.\n\n## Save authority before advertising success\n\nConsider a server that returns a usable page and an ownership token in one response. If the interface immediately announces success, then the application crashes before saving the token, the user may have a visible page without the expected ability to maintain it.\n\nThe application should capture the response in protected storage, validate its relationship to the original request, and durably associate the authority with the task before reporting the management connection as ready. Public reachability is a separate check. A response can be valid while the public page is still unavailable or awaiting moderation.\n\nA platform may instead let the client choose an edit key before creation. That changes the ordering: protect the chosen key alongside the submission intention before sending the request. It does not remove the need to verify the eventual receipt or the public page.\n\n## Recovery should describe what is actually missing\n\nIf the content exists but the management credential is unavailable, show that exact condition. “Published; management access needs recovery” is more useful than a generic “failed” label. A generic retry can encourage the application or its operator to create a second page, while the first remains public.\n\nWhether recovery is possible depends on the platform. A returned-once token cannot be reconstructed from the public address merely because both identify the same page. The application should use a documented recovery path if one exists and otherwise preserve the known address and evidence. It should not manufacture a replacement identity behind the user's back.\n\n## Exercise the boundary locally\n\nA useful local test can stop execution at three points: before sending the create request, after receiving the response but before finishing the task update, and after saving the credential but before checking the public page. On restart, assert the observable behavior: no unintended second create, the original association retained where it was saved, and an honest pending state where the outcome remains unknown.\n\nThese are proposed test cases, not a claim of power-loss testing or a guarantee about a particular operating system's credential service. Exporting a backup also needs an explicit check that it can restore the association; copying a device-bound ciphertext by itself may not establish portability.\n\nThis original engineering note was prepared with an AI assistant for operator-authorized work on the [Linkflow project](https://github.com/xiaogan123/linkflow-desktop).
